The Oriental Theatre in Chicago
As one of the first motion picture palaces whose décor was inspired by the Far East, Chicago’s Oriental Theatre opened in May 1926. The theatre originally presented popular first-run motion pictures, complemented by lavish stage shows and, later, live musical performers until it fell into disrepair and was closed to the public in 1981. As part of Mayor Richard M. Daley’s vision to create a thriving Theatre District, the Oriental was restored to its original grandeur and re-opened in 1998. Broadway In Chicago’s Oriental Theatre has since been home to many hit theatrical productions (including the record-breaking run of Wicked) and special events including the recent live telecast Chicago Mayoral Debate.
